Kevin Garnett is one of the most stand up guys in the NBA.
He’s always said the right things about the Timberwolves, always played the
role of the veteran that needs a little help but won’t complain about the front
office to the media, and he’s always done his part to put the T-Wolves on the winning
track.
But that isn’t enough.
Garnett has given Minnesota ample opportunity to surround
him with talent, guys that can play off of him, guys that can help him towards
that goal of winning a championship. The sad thing is it never seemed like the
front office was keen on actually working towards that goal.
With rumors of Garnett potentially being traded to the
Celtics or Suns, it looked like Boston could (at one point) be able to put
together a deal that could still keep Paul Pierce in Celtics green; however,
Garnett realized a few of the pieces the C’s would have to give up to get him
would be counter productive to him being traded. For the Celtics to pull off
the trade they would have had to give up both Al Jefferson and the #5 pick. If
they were able to keep Al Jeff, would Garnett want to stay? Who knows. The
bottomline is he isn’t coming to Beantown. There are now reports and mass
speculation that Garnett’s agent never even ran the Boston trade by him and
declined on his own, so he can see if he can find a better deal.
I am a huge Garnett fan, always have been. He is easily my
second favorite player in the league behind Pierce, so this would have been a
dream for me; however, if Ainge had to give up what they were asking it would
have been oh so bittersweet for me.
Rumors are still swirling, with the latest that Kobe will
get his wish and get some help in the form of Garnett, with other rumors
persisting that Boston could be involved in a four way trade between the
Lakers, Wolves, and Indiana, with the C’s getting Jermaine O’Neal, but at what
cost? Makes sense though with Kevin McHale called the shots in Minnesota, Larry
Bird manning the ship in Indiana, and Danny Ainge doing his best in Beantown.
Sorta like a reunion of sorts.
Whatever happens, I think Ainge will be smart and
won’t set us back by trading the future, while still trying to find some help
for Pierce during his prime years.
