I will never understand why Yankee fans are starting to
grumble whenever they “shave our Division lead to single digit games”. The Sox
have played the Devil Rays a total of 3 times this season, leaving 15 more
games to beat up on them. There are still plenty of games between the Sox and
Yanks as well, leaving destiny squarely in Boston’s hands.
I’m just confused as to why I am starting to hear it from
Yankee fans, as if we had a 30 game lead and it’s down to 5 games now. I have
friends who unfortunately are Yankee fans in my fantasy league that will go
weeks without saying anything at all to anyone about anything, and as soon as
it gets back to about 9 games, all of a sudden it’s like life was breathed into
them once again and out comes the, “Watch out…you guys are gonna blow it” and
“You always fold, why would this year be different?”
It’s actually quite simple: because the Yanks have nothing
to trade to fill major holes in their pitching staff and they are where the Sox
were about 6 years ago with the farm, woefully depleted and trying to rebuild
their system from the ground up.
The Yankees are aging everywhere. Look at their pitching:
Clemens, Mussina, Pettitte, Rivera. Their combined age is about 200 years old.
And it won’t get any easier for the Yankees.
With Giambi surely to say more about the steroid scandal,
the Yanks will get probably nothing in return for him if they trade him. With
Alex Rodriguez playing the way he should have been playing all along for the
Yankees, he will opt out of his contract at the end of the year and laugh at
the Yanks as he signs a $32 million deal with the Cubs, which will definitely
happen if Mark Cuban ends up buying the team.
The infrastructure Brian Cashman helped build up over the
last few years is rapidly depleting. Sure, Steinsbaby could buy players like
Andruw Jones or even Barry Bonds, but how far will that set him back? You get
the feeling that Steinsbaby will do whatever he can to get the Yankees another
championship so he can retire, but you get the same feeling too that that won’t
be happening any time soon.
What a shame.
