Patriot Nation can rest easy. Randy Moss is will remain in a Patriots uniform for a least the next few years after signing a 3 year, $27 million deal, $15 million of which is guaranteed, and $12 in bonuses.
It's being reported the Philadelphia Eagles offered Moss much more than the Patriots offered, but the lure of playing with Brady was just too much for him to pass up, especially after the Eagles could not guarantee that Donovan McNabb would remain an Eagle. Interesting.
Many sports pundits are saying the Patriots are the biggest losers in free agency this season. Have any of them paid attention to what the Patriots have done before? Ty Law? Lawyer Milloy? Ted Washington? Signing Randy Moss was the number one priority of free agency. Any way you look at it, they got the job done. Randall Gay going to the Saints? Hardly a huge loss. Donte Stallworth? Again, good player, but a role player. Kelley Washington should fill that role. Asante Samuel? He is just like Ty Law: the Patriots defense and schemes allowed him to become the player he was and springboard into free agency and get that big contract.
To be honest, I like Gay and Stallworth. All my friends in my fantasy league know I have always been a huge Stallworth fan, even before last season. But Samuel is what is wrong in sports. To quote Samuel as he was introduced as an Eagle he said, "I just want a chance to be able to win and get back to the Super Bowl," Samuel said. "That's why I picked the Philadelphia Eagles."
Ummmm...excuse me? Do you really expect anyone to believe you left the Patriots, who prior to the Super Bowl were undefeated at 18-0, to go to the Eagles because you wanted to get BACK to the Super Bowl? A team that was 8-8 in the regular season and barely broke even in the points for vs. points against ratio? Are you kidding me?
Jim Rome said it best: we'll think a lot more of you if you just say, "I played my ass off, now it's time to get paid". We will. It will be refreshing, and we won't wince or laugh out loud when we hear bogus diarrhea like that coming out of your mouth.
Side tangent: Jim Rome is the man. He speaks his mind, has an incredible sense of what is both right and wrong and what is really going on, and he has no qualms about speaking his mind, even to interviewees faces. He doesn't. Rome is legit, he is awesome and I love the guy. People respect him, whether they agree with him or not, because he tells it how it is, and people know where he stands.
That said, if the Patriots resign Jabar Gaffney, he should take over the #3 slot nicely, and between Gaff and Washington, and Welker and Moss, the Patriots should have a great receiving corps once again.
